Encourage Your Children to Play Outside

As time goes by childhood obesity is becoming more of a problem within the developed world. Fewer and fewer children pursue outdoor activities but instead turn to more straightforward activities that require less effort and energy.

The Rise of Technology

Playing outside has largely been replaced by games consoles, social networking and other electronic activities. However, scientific studies have proven numerous advantages of playing outside with other children rather than remaining indoors. Playing outside with other children uses energy and therefore burns fat, it helps to maintain a balanced mental state and also develops invaluable social skills. The following toys for the back yard may encourage children to choose outdoor play over electronic play.

Traditional Toys

The swingball has become one of the top ten best selling toys over the period of the last ten years. They are common features in many gardens all over the country. The toy is especially popular because it can be used by the child on their own or with a friend. The toy is simple in concept with a tennis ball tethered to a central pole around which it pivots when it is hit by the child using a plastic racquet. The toy can provide hours of fun for the child as well as keeping the child active and allowing them to interact with parents and friends alike in a fun and casual setting.

Exercise and Play

The swing is a traditional toy that has been used by adults and children alike for centuries. The swing can be used as a form of outdoor relaxation for the child or it can be used in a more active and vigorous manner, promoting good exercise and a healthy mental state. Moreover, it can promote healthy interaction between the child and parents and may even be enjoyed by more than one child. Swings may be free standing or suspended from a fixed structure such as a tree. Traditional toys such as the swing are tried and tested and have endured for centuries for good reason.

Another traditional toy that is greatly enjoyed by children all over the world is the climbing frame. Modern climbing frames have developed significantly when compared to the older more traditional wooden equivalents. Modern climbing frames may encompass climbing equipment but also swings and slides and a variety of other equipment which vary the play of the child. Climbing frames offer children hours of entertainment and social interaction with other children within a variety of different activities.

Obesity

While electronic games do have their place and have certainly become well established within the lifestyle of the modern child, more traditional outdoor play still has a lot to offer in shaping a well rounded and balanced young individual. Outdoor play is invaluable in combating childhood obesity as it offers an opportunity for the child to vent pent up energy. Venting this energy in a constructive manner will also ensure that the child remains mentally balanced and not frustrated. Finally, outdoor play breaks the isolation of electronic games and nurtures the development of critical social skills.

Thanks for posting this article! Parents and caregivers need to limit children's screen time and encourage outside play. And it's important for us parents to get outside and play with our children, too!
